In addition to assisting with master planning validation, SBEC provided mechanical and electrical engineering and design services for the renovation of approximately 109,000 GSF and 4-story addition of 88,000 GSF to the existing 186,000 GSF West Building. Scope of work included converting the two- or three-patient rooms in the West Building into 24 private rooms and expanding and modernizing the existing facilities. Specific scope consists of:

Expansion:

  • 1st Floor – Approximately 16,000 sf, outpatient entry and services, administration, support spaces
  • 2nd Floor – Approximately 16,000 sf, expanded patient unit, including all necessary support functions
  • 3rd Floor – Approximately 16,000 sf, expanded patient unit, including all necessary support functions
  • 4th Floor – Approximately 16,000 sf, shell space for future, therapy garden and green roof

Approximately 190,000 sf of phased renovation was needed to upgrade existing patient rooms to all private rooms and 1st floor support and administration space, including upgrade to existing MEP systems to comply with current standards.

The existing facility has two hospital buildings, a wellness and fitness center and a 47-unit family and outpatient housing facility. There is also a three-story parking garage on the campus. Craig employs 576 full-time staff as well as about 200 part-time and on-call staff members.

Since 1998, SBEC has been designing projects for Craig Hospital. The hospital located at Clarkson and Girard in Englewood, Colorado, is world-renowned as a premier center for specialty rehabilitation and research for people with spinal cord injury (SCI) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Craig has treated more than 28,000 patients with SCI and TBI since 1956, and has treated more patients with SCI than any other single facility in the U.S.

The project was designed in Revit.
