Englewood, CO – Shaffer · Baucom Engineering & Consulting (SBEC) has been selected to design the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems for the Craig Hospital Addition and Renovation
project, which preliminary analyses have estimated at approximately $75 million in construction costs. The project is anticipated to consist of a four-story addition to the existing West Building, as
well as the renovation of nearly 180,000 existing square feet.
Since 1998, SBEC has been designing projects for Craig Hospital [www.craighospital.org]. The hospital located at Clarkson and Girard in Englewood, Colorado, is world-renowned as a premier
center for specialty rehabilitation and research for people with spinal cord injury (SCI) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Craig has treated more than 28,000 patients with SCI and TBI since 1956, and has treated more patients with SCI than any other single facility in the U.S.
Currently, there are about 80 patients at Craig. The campus includes the main building containing the treatment facilities and patient housing on the west side of Clarkson as well as an apartment
complex for patients and their families on the east side of Clarkson.
“Our main building dates back to the 1970s and needs to be modernized plus we need more room to treat patients,” said Mike Fordyce, Craig President. “The plan is to construct a four-story addition
on the northwest side of the west building. It will include 24 new private rooms. As part of the project, we will convert the two- or three-patient rooms in the West Building to private rooms and we
will expand and modernize existing facilities where patients and their families can gather to relax.”
Fordyce said the expansion also is designed to meet future needs as the fourth floor of the addition will be a shell and construction delayed until the space is needed. He also said the construction will
have no impact on day-to-day hospital operations. “Our goal is to complete the fundraising so we can begin construction early in 2013,” said Fordyce.
The facility traces its roots to 1907, when Frank Craig established a treatment center in Lakewood for men with tuberculosis called the Tent Colony of Brotherly Love.
