In 2010, Covidien – a leading manufacturer of medical devices and supplies, diagnostic imaging agents and pharmaceuticals – selected SBEC to provide mechanical engineering design services for their new Building 7 Innovation Center located in Boulder, Colorado.

SBEC’s project scope consisted of the Design/Build of a new two-story building on land that was owned by Covidien, directly north of their existing Building 6.  Building 7 consists of a two-story facility with a footprint of 30,550 square feet.  It is attached to Building 6 through the use of an atrium and was designed to meet LEED Gold Certification.  The new space consists of general office and cubicle areas, conference rooms, break rooms, restrooms, mechanical and facility space and laboratories.

New laboratory areas consist of a tissue lab, tissue storage, bio lab, histology lab, prototype lab, BD&L (New Technologies) lab, hardware lab, demonstration lab, DRT lab, ligasure/ablation/monopolar lab, GMP lab, pilot lab and chemical storage space.
